Codium sits directly on the shoreline, just south of Kuta Lombok, but it feels emotionally removed from the bustle of itineraries and checklists. The aesthetic nods gently toward Tulum — chic but relaxed — while remaining grounded in its Lombok setting. Group sized sunbeds with canopies, grass umbrellas, comfortable lounge seating, and a restaurant area that never feels closed off from the sea. Everything flows, encouraging wandering rather than settling too quickly.

It has the energy of a castaway’s imagined paradise — effortless, grounded, quietly beautiful. Nothing shouts. Everything invites you to stay.

I told myself I was there for lunch. I did not leave until sunset.

The beauty of the place lies in how easily it allows you to move through the day. Food to beach. Beach to cocktails. Cocktails to pool. Pool back to the table. 

At the heart of the seated restaurant area is the open-fire kitchen.

Flames flicker steadily as chefs work with locally line-caught seafood, seasonal vegetables, cooking simply and confidently over fire. The influence is Mediterranean, but the flavours using local produce merge seamlessly with this part of the world. The dishes are designed for sharing, which immediately sets the tone: this is food meant to be tasted slowly, discussed, passed around the table.

Our grilled octopus skewers and Signature Stuffed Crab From the oven were unforgettable. Tender and perfectly cooked, carrying that gentle ocean sweetness, then lifted by a harissa blend that brought warmth, spice, and aromatic depth. Zesty, balanced, melt-in-the-mouth. 

You know a restaurant holds an honest passion for food when each dish has its own personality. Some flavours arrived boldly, unapologetic and confident. Others revealed themselves more quietly, appearing in layers, in moments.

Then there are the cocktails.

The menu is expansive without being overwhelming — crafted, playful, clearly taken seriously. 

We worked our way through several, but the standout was the Blueberry & Thyme: smoked grape tequila, homemade blueberry liqueur, Oloroso sherry, and thyme. Sipped slowly, feet sandy, breeze rolling in, it delivered a rare, fleeting sense of completeness — the kind where you think, briefly and sincerely, that if this were the last day on earth, it would be enough.

Around me, the crowd felt easy. Couples lingered over long lunches. Travellers fresh from the road slipped into the pool for a cool-down drink and a dip. No one seemed in a rush, and no one seemed out of place. Staff moved through the space with warmth and attentiveness — present without hovering, happy to explain the concept, genuinely engaged.

More than anything, Codium offers decompression. It’s calmer and more serene than you might expect from a beachfront venue so close to Kuta Lombok, and that restraint feels intentional. Even at capacity, the energy would lean social rather than loud, convivial rather than chaotic.

One of Codium’s quiet strengths is its lack of judgement. Arrive alone with a laptop, with friends ready to feast, or with family in tow — it all fits. Children are welcome, with a considered menu and a shallow pool designed for play. It’s luxury without gatekeeping: generous, comfortable, and refreshingly human.

As afternoon slipped into evening, wine glasses began to clink more slowly. The wine list, stretching across regions and styles, invites lingering — from sparkling and crisp whites to refreshing rosés and deeper, juicier reds. Conversations softened. The fire kept burning. I stayed longer than planned, then longer still, deliberately allowing time to enjoy, to drink, to eat, and eventually to ease back into the night.

Codium feels like a place still unfolding — confident in what it already is, curious about what it might become. For now, it stands as one of South Lombok’s most generous dining experiences: special but approachable, beautiful without performance, and designed for those who understand that the best days are the ones you don’t rush.
